How did Beethoven composed while being deaf?

Ear-training; he was musically literate. How does a person write prose when they are deaf? It's the same process. Beethoven could imagine sounds, and knew what their equivalent in notation would be. this is a skill taught to all conservatory students, and which you too can learn.
