uming no air resistance, why does an 8 hm/s horizontally fired projectile not strike the Earth’s surface?

the only reason that i can think of would be that it enters orbit around the earth. it is pulled toward the ground by gravity at the same rate that the earth curves away, thus never touching the earth.
